BGAN and Remote Video Broadcasting

BGAN is also being used for remote video broadcasting. The service is being used for live and store and forward video with a variety of equipment configurations, depending on the desired quality. For remote video transmission, broadcasters are using standard internet connections, or 128 and 256 Kilobit per second data rate streaming channels with guaranteed bandwidth.

For optimal broadcast quality, the 256 Kilobit per second streaming channel is being used with high quality video encoders and decoders and digital cameras. With a variety of IP services available, broadcasters can use different services for each project based on their quality requirements and budgetary constraints. It is also possible to set up remote demonstrations to push video to broadcast studios at different rates to simulate the differences in quality between the available BGAN services.

One additional consideration for the highest quality video transmissions is the last portion of the remote transmission. The 256 Kilobit per second streaming rate is only guaranteed over the BGAN network. From the BGAN ground station to the destination location, the remote video traffic goes over the public internet. The quality over the public internet may be good. However, the quality is not guaranteed. For frequent remote video transmissions, T1 lines can be leased from the BGAN ground station to the destination location to insure high quality from end to end. For live video transmissions on rare occasions, ISDN lines can be provisioned from the BGAN ground station to the destination location. The ISDN lines do not require a long term lease commitment, and they can be provisioned based on the desired data rate.
