BGAN and Remote Audio Broadcasting

BGAN supports traditional audio broadcasts with POTS and ISDN services. With BGAN’s ISDN service, there is no need lease ISDN lines for every remote broadcast. Many of today’s audio CODECs (Coder/Decoders) have integrated IP capability in addition to POTS or ISDN functionality. The IP capability may require a streaming channel at a fixed data rate, or the equipment may operate with a standard internet connection.

Traditionally, these devices have not functioned well with lower data rates or standard internet connections with a fluctuating data rate. However, a new generation of CODECs with IP capability is emerging, and they are showing promise with standard internet connections and lower streaming channel rates (as low as 32 Kilobits per second). This means lower costs for remote audio broadcasts. Mackay has been working with customers and CODEC manufacturers to test this equipment, and to evaluate IP connections for remote broadcasts. This testing will continue as new CODECs enter the market, with lab tests and field tests. As IP CODECs continue to improve, they will provide a cost effective alternative to ISDN. BGAN provides the best of both worlds with POTS, ISDN and IP capability in a single terminal.

BGAN terminals may be purchased or rented, and there is a terminal for every broadcasting budget. For more information on BGAN and its broadcast applications, contact Mackay Communications at 919 850-3000 or e-mail mackaynews@mackaycomm.com
