In preparation for the 2007 hurricane season Iridium is reminding customers to Test Your Satellite Phone. By dialing 00-1-480-752-5105 from their satellite phone, Iridium subscribers can verify that their phone is working properly and familiarize themselves with the phone's operation - all free of charge.

The service also allows satellite phone users the opportunity to increase their knowledge of using their handset and to confirm that its fully operational before an emergency strikes.

Similar to the popular bi-annual testing of smoke alarms, this call-to-action is a campaign to ensure that first responders know how to use their satellite phones and that they are, in fact, ready for use.

The following are a few recommended steps to keep test your phone and keep it ready for when its needed:

Test your phone on a monthly basis

Keep your phone's battery charged. For maximum battery performance, allow the battery to discharge completely before fully re-charging.

Make sure that the phone's SIM card is locked in place. Check this by removing the battery and ensuring that the SIM card tray is securely positioned.

Protect the antenna by stowing it in the 'down position' when not in use.

Go outside with a clear view of the sky and horizon. Common obstructions such as tall buildings and nearby trees may cause calls to drop prematurely.
