MACKAY'S PRODUCTIVE HISTORY
- In 1884 John Mackay and James Bennett founded the Commercial Cable Company, laying two transatlantic communications cables, whereby substantially decreasing the prevailing message rate of its competitors. Headquartered in New York, its sister firm, the Postal Telegraph Company, was formed in 1886. With the combined effort of both firms, the “Mackay System” evolved into a vast network of telegraph operations, including majority market share of U.S. land-based network, and international communications via its trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific cable partnerships.
- Mackay's enterprises have demonstrated a persistent pattern of expansion and been on the forefront of land and shipboard technologies. ITT acquired the Mackay firms in 1928, continuing the determination, and financial backing to provide state-of-the-art array of communications systems. In 1987, Mackay Communications, Inc., was formed as a privately held firm, headquartered in Raleigh, NC, USA, also home of Mackay’s Satellite Communications Division. Mackay is supported by its fifteen strategic U.S. and five international locations and has relations with hundreds of vendor and service firms worldwide.
Today, Mackay Communications partners with the major satellite communications equipment manufacturers and is an authorized distributor for Inmarsat, Iridium, Globalstar and VSAT satellite phones, terminal equipment and airtime services. Periodic required inspections, certifications service and maintenance contracts (includes consolidated equipment repair review), are also available.
